Getachew Reda, the spokesperson of Tigray President and member of the TPLF central committee, claimed in a tweet a few minutes ago that the Ethiopian air force conducted a drone strike on Tigray’s Tekeze hydropower project today. He said that the strike happened in the early morning hours. Tigray-backed news sources have not shared any video from the scene of the incident so far.
In November 2020, Tigray President Debretsion Gebremichael had claimed that the Ethiopian air force had conducted an airstrike on Tekeze Hydro Power Project. Later Ethiopian government forces took control of the project site but there were no signs of any substantial damage.
Getachew Reda has not shared any details about today’s drone strike on the dam site. The Ethiopian government has not issued any official statement in this regard so far. But over the past few weeks, after the purchase of new combat drones, the Ethiopian air force has stepped up drone attacks on Tigray.
Yesterday Tigray government wrote a letter to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urging the latter to stop Turkey, UAE, and Iran from providing combat drones and other weapons to the Ethiopian government.
