Ethiopian Federal Government spokesperson on Thursday warned Tigray region government. The warning came amid tensions in Raya Alamata zone of Ethiopia.
Lagesse Tulu, Federal Communication Minister, expressed alarm at trends in contested territories. He implied that Tigray and Amhara militias were being mobilized in contested territories especially in Raya Alamata. Tigray and Amhara regions are locked in dispute over two disputed zones i.e. southern zone ( Raya Alamata, Korem, Ofla etc) and western zone ( Welkait, Humera, Tsegede)
On Monday, Tigray and Amhara militia members clashed in Raya Alamata. According to locals sources, Tigray militia members launched an attack to capture more kebeles. Fighting went on for around half an hour and Tigray fighters captured more than one kebeles. Ethiopian military intervened and averted a major confrontation between Tigray and Amhara fighters.
The minister warned warned Tigray region government indirectly. He said that Tigray people did not want to suffer again. He reiterated federal government’s position about disputed territories, saying that Ethiopian military would take over these areas and referendum would be held to determine the status of these areas.
Monday’s clash between Tigray and Amhara militia sent shockwaves across Tigray and Amhara region. Almost a year ago, Ethiopia came out of a deadly war in northern Ethiopia between Tigray fighters and Federal forces supported by Amhara forces and Eritrean military. Around half a million were killed in the war.
