Mekelle University Students were beaten by police on Friday as the students held a demonstration. The students held a demonstration to protest against an extension in their graduation degree program.
According to students of the Mekelle university, the University had extended graduation degree program by one year without consulting the students. On Friday, students gathered to organize a peaceful demonstration.
Mekelle police intervened and it resorted to excessive force to disperse the students, claim the students. Several male and female students were severely beaten by police, Pictures and videos circulating in social media show Mekelle police members manhandling students at the university. Reportedly, police arrested around 10 students. Unknow numbers of students was injured in the use of force by the police.
Interestingly, last year, Mekelle police tortured and beat opposition parties’ workers when the workers tried to protest against Tigray government at a square in Mekelle city. Opposition political parties accuse Tigray interim government and TPLF of denying right to protest to civilians in Tigray.
