Several Ethiopians were arrested in Washington DC on Friday. The arrests were caught on camera. The arrests happened amid growing anti government protests by Ethiopian diaspora groups.
Ethiopian diaspora groups, mainly from Amhara ethnic groups, have been stepping up protests against the Ethiopian government in Europe, the US and Canada since last year. The Amhara protesters accuse Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government of committing genocide of ethnic Amhara and working to impose the dominance of Oromo ethnic group in Ethiopia.
Earlier this month, several protesters stormed Ethiopian embassy in UK. The protesters entered the embassy building and pasted stickers with “Fano” written on them. Amhara Fano militias have been fighting in the Amhara region of Ethiopia since last year. The militias and their supporters in diaspora claim that Fano are fighting to protect the rights of oppressed Amharas.
On Friday, several Ethiopians tried to forcibly enter the Ethiopian embassy in Washington DC. The embassy requested police for help. Secret Service Police arrived at the spot and arrested several angry protesters who were trying to storm the embassy building.
Majority of the Ethiopian diaspora except Tigrayans rallied behind the Ethiopian Prime Minister during the 2 year long Tigray war which ended in November 2022. But after military launched a disarmament operation in the Amhara region, Amhara diaspora groups turned against PM Abiy Ahmed’s government. Since then some Amhara diaspora groups have been protesting against the Ethiopian government.
