CBE Ethiopia Starts Displaying Pictures of Customers on Bank Branches

CBE Ethiopia has started displaying pictures of customers on its branches. Pictures of those customers are being displayed who made illegal money transactions during a technical glitch last month which cost CBE $14 million.

Commercial Bank of Ethiopia issued a second three-day deadline on Sunday 31st March 2024, which expired on Wednesday 3rd April 2024. Moreover, the customers were told to return the money by the expiry of the deadline. After this deadline, the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia published the first set of pictures of the customers who took money illegally. So far the bank has published five sets of pictures within the last one week or so.

Now CBE Ethiopia has decided to publicly display the pictures of the customers on the buildings and doors of its bank branches. Several bank branches today displayed customers’ pictures on large posters. However, the move is being criticized by some quarters calling it unfair and unprofessional.

Customers and their family members have been seen lining up in front of CBE branches to see the pictures displayed on these branches. Commercial Bank of Ethiopia is posting the pictures and identity of the customers step by step. It will be interesting to see if these customers will return the money to the bank or not. The bank has been threatening to take legal action against those who fail to return the money. CBE Ethiopia still has to recover the remaining $4 million out of $14 million lost during the technical glitch.
