Ethiopia: Shoa Fano this week announced to expand its operations. Since last year, Fano groups have been waging an armed resistance movement against regional and federal forces of Ethiopia. Center of this movement is Amhara region of Ethiopia.
Shoa Fano released a video message 2 days ago. The message was released in connection with the death of Fano commander Wubante Abate. The commander was killed by the Ethiopian security forces in South Gondar zone of the Amhara region on Tuesday.
In the video message, two Fano commanders spoke. Commander Mekataw and Abebe Mulatu are two top commanders from Shoa Fano group. The commanders announced to take the war out of Amhara. Shewa Fano is operating in North Shewa zone of the Amhara. North Shoa zone of Amhara shares border with the Oromia region of Ethiopia.
Several Fano commanders have been publicly declaring that they want to reach Addis Ababa to remove the Ethiopian regime. Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian federal capital, is surrounded by Oromia region. In order to enter Addis Ababa from Amhara, one has to pass through Oromia. It seems that the announcement by Mekataw & Mulatu suggests that Fano groups will expand their operations from Amhara into Oromia to reach Addis Ababa.
Fano fighters have been making incursions into the Oromia region of Ethiopia. They have been carrying out probing attacks in North Shewa, East Shewa and Horo Gudurru zones of the Oromia region since last year.
