Ethiopia: A Fano group announced yesterday that it had formed an alliance with fighters from a neighboring region.

Since last year, when they waged resistance movement in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, Fano fighters have been trying to find allies. They have been in talks with groups in the neighboring Benishangul Gumuz (BG), Oromia, Tigray and Afar regions of Ethiopia. Removal of Ethiopian regime is Fano militia’s stated goal. To achieve this objective, the armed group has been in talks with other militias.

Yesterday Marshet Tsehaye, Gojjam Fano spokesperson, disclosed that Gojjam Fano had struck an alliance with Gumuz fighters from the Benishangul Gumuz region. He said that after the formation of this alliance, Gumuz militia members had carried out attacks in Gilgel Beles and Mandura. The two places are situated in the Metekel zone of the BG. Last week, reportedly, Amhara and Gumuz fighters stormed a police stations in the Metekel zone.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is located in the Benishangul Gumuz regional state of Ethiopia. The state shares border with Sudan. Ethiopia has long been accusing Egypt and Sudan of training and arming Ethiopian armed groups to infiltrate into BG.

Fano’s alliance with Gumuz fighters seems to be aimed at former’s intentions to go deep into the Benishangul Gumuz region to either move towards GERD or towards border with Sudan. Secondly, Fano groups want to form a broad political and military alliance. They want to the remove Abiy Ahmed, the Ethiopian Prime Minister. They want other oppositions groups in the country to join Fano in removing the government and discuss about post-removal scenario.
