Ethiopian authorities have arrested and deported over 18,000 illegally residing foreigners. The information was shared yesterday during a presentation of The Ethiopian Immigration and Citizenship Services ICS’s nine-month performance report. The ICS gave a briefing to the Standing Committee on Law and Justice Affairs of the House of Peoples Representatives.

Deputy Director General of ICS, Gosa Demissie, said that foreign individuals had not only made fake residence permits but they were involved in selling the fake residence documents to others too. Some foreign nationals who came to Ethiopia for investment purposes were found to be involved in illegal activities for more than 5 years, claimed the ICS Deputy Director.

The Ethiopian Immigration and Citizenship Services did not share details of the nationalities of the foreigners who had been deported in recent months.

Tens of thousands of Eritreans are living in Ethiopia. For years, Eritreans have been using Ethiopia as a transit to reach European countries. Displacements from Somalia into Ethiopia are also common keeping in view the climate change related disasters and fragile security situation in Somalia where the government has been fighting the Al Shabaab armed group for years.

Thousands of Sudanese refugees have been crossing into Ethiopia since last year. War broke out in Sudan more than a year ago between the Sudanese military led by General Abdul Fattah al Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Hamdan Dagalo.
