The Ministry of Education of Ethiopia announced today that it will conduct 12th-Grade leaving national exams online in selected cities. The ministry led by Minister Berhanu Nega said that the exam cannot be conducted fully online.
The ministry announced that selected students from all regions will take their exams online. While the rest of the students will take the exam as usual. Dr. Eshetu Kebede, the Director General of the Education Assessment and Examinations Service, said that preparations are underway to conduct the exam online.
To prepare the students for the online format, students will avail the facility of trial exams to practice. The ministry also indicated that students will receive repeated training and coaching to prepare them for the online exam. The coaching training is set to begin from the next week.
The exam, prepared for 12th-Grade students, is a national examination given to students who complete secondary school. Moreover, the past two years have witnessed an alarming trend in Ethiopia’s educational landscape, as a staggering 97% of the nationwide students failed their Grade 12th exams. In the year 2022, only 3.3% of the country’s students scored above 50% of the required marks, whereas in this year (2023), only 3.2% scored above 50% of the required marks.
