Addis Ababa Police in Ethiopia arrested several YouTube channels managers on Friday. The police accused them of spreading false and offensive stories.
The YouTubers had rented an office in a building in Yeka sub city of the capital city. These people created several YouTube channels. One of the people arrested is Mekdes Mekonon. The detained YouTubers were running YouTube channels related to the culture and ethics of Ethiopia. Biruk Workneh has also been arrested who was working as deputy manager and coordinator.
Other arrested people include several presenters like Nathaniel Abera Bekele, Asmare Mhret, and Mhret Yasin Tiga. Nathaniel Yohannes Ashenef, who worked as the cameraman. has also been arrested.
The police accused all the arrested people of making up false stories and propagating information against Ethiopian culture and ethics.
Interestingly this month Reporters Without Border published World Press Freedom Index. Ethiopia slid to number 141 from last year’s 131. Dozens of journalists have been jailed in Ethiopia in the last three years while several fled the country. Read More…
