Eritrean government yesterday released dozens of Tigrayans who have been imprisoned in Eritrea for months.
According to Sheraro city mayor, 46 Tigrayans were handed over to Sheraro government by Eritrean military. The Tigrayans remained imprisoned in Barentu city Gash Barka region of Eritrea. Eritrean government did not issue any formal statement about the release of Tigrayans. But Tigray authorities confirmed the release.
In the 2-year long war in Northern Ethiopia between Ethiopian federal troops and Tigray regional fighters, Eritrean military supported federal troops. Eritrean Defense Force (EDF) deployed thousands of its troops and military equipment in Tigray to support Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) against Tigray fighters. The war came to an end in November 2022.
During the war Tigray authorities accused Eritrean military of abducting Tigrayans from Tigray and taking them forcibly to Eritrea. Eritrea never admitted that its military had abducted Tigrayans.
Tigray and Eritrea are still locked into a dispute over their borders. Tigray accuses Eritrea of being in occupation of Tigray territories. Eritrea denies these allegations.
While release of Tigrayans is a step in the right direction, reportedly hundreds of other Tigrayans are still imprisoned in Eritrea.
