A football match between the soccer teams of Ethiopia and Eritrea has been cancelled. The two teams were due to face each other in African Nations Championship qualifiers. The match due to be played in Juba South Sudan has been cancelled.
Reportedly, the Eritrean team has withdrawn from this soccer tournament. African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament is being played in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Ethiopia and Eritrea were due to meet in the first qualifier of this African Soccer Tournament.
Eritrean government did not issue any official statement in this regard. Earlier Somalia also withdrew from CHAN, citing shortage of funds faced by the football federation of Somalia.
The withdrawal of Eritrean team from the competition seems to be either due to lack of funds or for fear of attempts by Eritrean players to seek asylum abroad.
