Addis Ababa News: Exchange of gunfire happened today between Amhara Fano fighters and police in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.
Last year, Ethiopian security forces launched a disarmament operation against Fano militias in the Amhara region. The militias fought alongside the Ethiopian federal forces against Tigray forces in the 2 year long war in northern Ethiopia.
After TPLF and federal government signed a peace deal in November 2022, the federal government launched disarmament and disbandment campaign against Fano militias and Amhara special forces. That led to start of armed uprising by Fano militias against the security forces in Amhara.
Fano commanders have been claiming that they would reach Addis Ababa soon to remove Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed’s government.
The shootout today between Addis Ababa police and Fano fighters happened in Bole sub city. Addis Ababa police issued a statement in this regard today. Fano commander, Nahusenai Andarge, was injured in the shootout. He was transferred to a hospital but he succumbed to injured. Another Fano member Habtamu Andarge Tesema tried to escape but failed. He is in police custody. Addis Police confirmed that two police officials were injured in his incident.
Fano groups have been trying to creep into Addis Ababa from Amhara through Oromia. Oromia regional security forces have put in place stringent security arrangements on Amhara-Oromia border. Despite these security measures, the Fano fighters managed to enter Addis Ababa. The killed Fano commander Nahusenai Andarge is reportedly from Gondar Amhara region.
