Tigray News: Tigray military commander Tadesse Werede today made a big announcement about disputed territories. Southern zone ( Raya Alamata, Korem, Ofla, Zata etc ) Western Zone (Humera, Welkait Tsegede) and Tselemti are disputed between the Tigray and Amhara regions.
Last month, Tigray fighters took control of large parts of the southern zone with only Alamata city remaining under Ethiopian military control. Since then Amhara regional government has been demanding the withdrawal of Tigray fighters from the southern zone.
Tadesse Werede briefed today about the implementation of Pretoria deal in southern and western zones. He said, by the end of first week of June 2024, Pretoria deal will be implemented in Southern zone and Tselemeti. And by the end of first week of 2024, Pretoria deal will be implemented in western zone too.
Implementation of Pretoria deal in these zones is viewed differently by Tigray and Amhara regions. Tigray wants to retake control of these zones, calling it implementation of Pretoria. While Amhara region wants a more negotiated solution with federal forces taking over the areas and holding of referendum there.
Some Amhara sources claim that federal government and Tigray interim government have reached a secret deal and Tigray would retake these disputed territories in coming months.
