Tensions are escalating in Raya Alamata amid mobilization of Tigray and Amhara militias. The two sides clashed on Monday.

Raya Alamata, Korem, Ofla (southern zone), Humera Wolkait Tsegede (western zone) are disputed territories between Tigray and Amhara regional states. The Pretoria deal, which was signed in November 2022 to put an end to 2 year long war in northern Ethiopia, could not lead to resolution of territorial disputes between Tigray and Amhara regional states.

After Monday’s clash, movement of Amhara & Tigray militias and Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) has been observed in the area. On Friday, residents of Raya Alamata took out a protest rally from Gerjale. The rally was backed and organized by provisional Amhara administration. The participants chanted slogans against TPLF and said that they were Amhara and they wanted to remain part of the Amhara region.

Meanwhile a delegation of negotiators was sent by provisional Amhara administration, based in Alamata, to Kukuftu to talk to Tigray representatives. The delegations consisted of Muslim and Orthodox religious elders. The meeting between the two sides ended with no progress.

Ethiopian military, which intervened on Monday to stop Amhara-Tigray fighting, has been seen making new adjustments in Raya Alamata. Military seems to be bringing in more reinforcements to meet the mounting security challenge in the area.
