WFP Ethiopia Faced with Multiple Challenges

WFP is facing multiple challenges in Ethiopia. 15.8 million people in Ethiopia are in need of food aid, says the WFP in a new report. The World Food Program further said there are around 1 million foreign refugees too in Ethiopia.

The World Food Program (WFP) says it is in need of 374 million dollars for the next six months to support people in need in Ethiopia. It provided aid to 2.7 million people in the last six months.

Ethiopia is hosting 1 million displaced refugees from South Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea and Sudan, and migration from Sudan continues.

The WFP report mentions that a driver of one of its partner organizations was killed in the Amhara region of Ethiopia last month. Last week the World Food Program expressed concerns about likely birr devaluation as currency devaluation could lead to rise in food inflation.

It seems that the World Food Program is facing multiple challenges in Ethiopia. The challenges are security, financial and logistical.

In Oromia and Amhara regions of Ethiopia, conflicts are ongoing between armed groups and security forces. Roads remain closed and transport services are disrupted frequently. Delivery of aid to the people in need is a challenge as by road travel is not safe.

Lack of funds is another challenge faced by WFP. Despite an end to war in Tigray, conflicts in other parts of Ethiopia and neighboring countries could not end. Number of people dependent on food aid could not decline considerably.
