Tenants in Addis Ababa Complain of Rent Hike by Landlords

Tenants in Addis Ababa are complaining of rent hike by landlords. The landlords increased rent after a new regulation was enforced by the city government recently.

Tenants and landlords have been told to register their lease agreement with the relevant government authority. Mrs. Yengatkokb Ababu, Public Relations Director of the Addis Ababa City Administration’s Housing Development and Management Office says that the contract registration is done only if the tenant and landlord agree. “The registration is done as agreed by the landlord and tenant, if they don’t agree, we will not do the registration,” he said.

A tenant who lives on rent in a condominium located in Lafto area and did not want to reveal her name, stated that she was told to pay 30 thousand birr for the house for which she was paying 20 thousand birr after the contract registration started.

Similarly, another individual whose rent was doubled from what they were paying before, said this was due to a loophole in the law.

It was being hoped that the landlord-tenant agreement would fix the rent price. But instead of fixing the issue, the tenants are facing more pressure from landlords to increase rent.
