Today Addis Ababa Housing Authority formally enforced a new law about how to evict a tenant. According to this new law, the landlords will have to give 2 months’ notice to evict tenants.
The new law called the ‘Housing Rent Control and Management Decree No. 1320/2016’ was approved by the House of Representatives around two months ago.
The head of the Addis Ababa housing development and management office, Woldegiorgis earlier stated that the decree is designed to ensure that the control and management of housing rent is stable, transparent and accountable, and that the interests and basic rights of landlords and tenants are balanced. A discussion was held recently to implement the Housing Rent Control and Management Proclamation.
The decree includes residential rental contracts and prices, powers of executive bodies and other provisions. In addition, it stipulates that landlords can only ask for advance payment for two months, and requires two months of preparation time to evict tenants.
