Ethiopian Fruits & Vegetables Export Project to be Built This Year

The Ethiopian Maritime and Logistics announced yesterday that Ethiopia would start building the “Cool Port Addis” project this year. The project is for exporting Ethiopian fruits and vegetables. Mihretab Teklu, from Ethiopian Sea and Logistics, said Ethiopia needs better infrastructure for its fruit and vegetables sector and it needs to build cooling containers to increase the foreign exchange by exporting fruits and vegetables.

The foundation stone for the “Cool Port Addis” project was laid six years ago at Modjo Dry Port. However, it got delayed due to financial issues and the need for further studies.

Mihretab Teklu said that after a long discussion and negotiations with the government of the Netherlands, he secured a $25 million support deal for the construction of this project. Moreover, the whole project will cost $50 million and the Ethiopian government will cover the other half.

The construction of this project will start this year and will be completed within two years. Moreover, after the completion of this project, it will help export more Ethiopian fruits and vegetables and bring more income to the country.

He also mentioned that the petrol storage depot is close to completion in Modjo Dry Port. It will start working the next month and it will ensure the supply of fuel at Modjo Dry Port. The cost of petrol storage depot is more than 47 million Birr.
