The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EUU) is making significant changes to help about 900,000 prepaid electricity customers. They are building a new technology center in Addis Ababa, which will cost $48 million. This new center will be completed by the end of the year, and the aim is to facilitate prepaid electricity consumers.

The new technology center is located in Kotebe, Addis Ababa. This center will address the complaints from prepaid customers regarding service delivery issues like power outages at service centers, lack of accessible service locations, and problems with payment notifications.

Director of Corporate Communications at EEU, Melaku Taye, stated this week that various challenges exist in the current prepaid service system. Moreover, after this upgrade, the customers will be able to recharge their electricity by using cards and digital payments. There will be no need to visit service centers.

Ethiopian Electric Utility (EUU) has more than 4.6 million customers in Ethiopia, of which 3.75 million are postpaid and 900,000 are prepaid users. A Chinese company secured this $48.8 million upgradation project for prepaid consumers.

This upgrade will help the current prepaid users and also the new ones in the future. This new system is a significant change from the old prepaid meters, as previously, people needed a secret number to recharge. The new system will be more accessible and modern.
