The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) today reported that it has recovered 96.3% of the money lost last month. Last month, CBE lost 801,417,747.81 Birr because of a technical glitch in its systems. Thousands of customers made illegal transactions during the system malfunction.

According to CBE’s latest statement, they have recovered around 771.3 million Birr, 96.3% of the lost money. Earlier, the bank told its customers to return the money they got illegally. The bank released pictures and identity information about customers who did not return money.

CBE displayed large posters outside its branches showing pictures of customers who had not returned the money. The bank so far has released 6 sets of pictures of those who failed to return the money. It threatened to initiate criminal proceedings too against the account holders.

The recovery is ongoing, and it seems that the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia might recover the full amount. In the last 4 days, CBE recovered 7,212,759 Birr.
