Ethiopian Orthodox Sunday Schools Department officials were arrested today. Sunday Schools department is part of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Mahiber Kidusan falls under the administration Sunday Schools department.
According to the Sunday Schools Department social media page, Mulugeta Seyum and Wasihun Balai were arrested today. Mulugeta Seyum works as the head of the department. while Wasihun is Secretary General.
The arrests were made in Addis Ababa by city police. The two are being investigated at a local police station. So far Addis Ababa police has not issued any statement about the reason behind these arrests.
Another senior official of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is also in police custody. Belay Mekonnen, who was working was deputy manager of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, was arrested last month for allegedly defrauding African Union headquarters out of more than $6 million.
Ethiopian government has been accusing elements in the Orthodox church of supporting armed militias in the Amhara region, called Fano. Since last year, Fano and the Ethiopian Military have been involved in hundreds of clashes across the Amhara region.
