The 1st African Aviation Safety & Operations Summit co-organized by AFRAA (African Airlines Association) and the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) took place on May 15, 2024 in Addis Ababa. The event focused on safety and operational best practices, with security likely being a part of the discussions.

The African Airlines Association (AFRAA), is a trade association of African airlines. AFRAA was founded in Accra, Ghana, in 1968, and is, as of February 2021, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. The primary purpose of AFRAA is to establish and facilitate co-operation between African airlines.

The Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) is a non-profit, international organization concerning research, education, advocacy, and communications in the field of aviation safety. It was founded in 1945. Since its foundation, it has acted as a non-profit, independent clearinghouse to disseminate safety information, identify threats to safety, and recommend practical solutions. Today, the foundation provides leadership to more than 1000 members in more than 100 countries

In Addis Ababa, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, Mesfin Tasew, addressed the summit stressing the importance of improving African aviation safety and operations. Mesfin Tasew claimed that African Airlines had, by meeting international security standards, not only made air travel safer in Africa but also set a new, higher standard for the whole airline industry.

The Ethiopian airline airline seems to be expanding not just international but also domestic operations. The airline reported this week that that it was expecting around 3.5 million domestic passengers by the end of the current budget year, which ends in June. This is an increase of 34.6% from last year’s passenger number. Last year, 2.6 million domestic passengers traveled with Ethiopian Airlines. The airline is seeing a gradual rise in domestic passenger numbers.

The CEO announced to work closely with governments, security teams, and other airlines to keep flights safe in Africa and around the world.
