Ethiopian FM, on Thursday, issued a strong statement criticizing a speech by US ambassador to Ethiopia. On Wednesday Erwin Masinga, the US ambassador, delivered a speech in Addis Ababa.
The Ethiopian Foreign ministry strongly rejected the US ambassador’s speech. Ervin Massinga, in his speech, asked Ethiopian armed groups like OLA, Fano and Tigray fighters to start dialogue and stop use of force. He advised the Ethiopian government against imprisoning its critics.
The Foreign Ministry of Ethiopia in its statement said that the ambassador’s speech contained “allegations against, and unsolicited advice to the Government of Ethiopia on how best to run the affairs of the country “.
“The statement is ill-advised and contains uninformed assertions. It is contrary to the historic and friendly relations between Ethiopia and the United States,” the ministry added.
This is the second time this month that Ethiopian government criticized US and western countries.
Earlier this month, US & 17 other countries’ embassies, based in Addis Ababa, on ‘World Press Freedom Day’, issued a joint statement criticizing press freedom situation in Ethiopia. Back then the Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) rejected the criticism and asserted its commitment to upholding freedom of expression.
