Last month, Ethiopian Airlines, the national carrier of Ethiopia, announced plans to launch flights to the city of Nekemte in the Oromia region. The Airline, back then, announced that the new route would commence on June 17, 2024.
Today, June 17, 2024, Ethiopian Airlines inaugurated new domestic flight service to Nekemte Gudina Tumsa International Airport in the Oromia region. House Speaker Tagese Chafo, Transport Minister Alemu Sime, Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew, and Oromia Vice President Awelu Abdi attended the opening ceremony.
Last month, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met with residents of the four Welega zones in Nekemte. During the discussion, locals raised various development concerns. The Prime Minister assured them that the government would work diligently to address these issues and support the city’s progress.
The construction of Nekemte Gudina Tumsa International Airport was completed at a cost of 1.3 billion birr. It is expected that this new airport will significantly improve market access for the region’s agricultural products, particularly coffee and fruits, through Ethiopian Airlines’ new route.
This new route will operate four times per week, providing increased connectivity and convenience for passengers traveling to and from Nekemte. This move by Ethiopian Airlines will strengthen its domestic network and support the country’s economic growth. Read More…
Currently, Ethiopian Airlines operates flights to more than 136 international and 23 domestic destinations using its fleet of 144 aircraft. By strategically adding new routes within Ethiopia, the national carrier aims to provide greater accessibility and convenience for travelers across the country.
