The letter states that the dues have been pending for over two decades. Ethiopian Airline suspended flights to Eritrea before 1998 Ethiopia-Eritrea war. The dues being demanded by the Eritrean Civil Aviation are from 1997/1998.

Reportedly, the Eritrean government sued the Ethiopian Airline at a local court in Eritrea. Last month, Ethiopian Airline stopped all fights to Eritrea after the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority gave it deadline of September 30 to stop flight operations in Eritrea.

During a press conference by the Ethiopian Airline last month, the Ethiopian airline officials, without mentioning the amount, claimed that Eritrean government owed to the Ethiopian Airlines. Reportedly, the Eritrean government owes over $3 million to the Ethiopian Airline.
