Another Boat Carrying Illegal Ethiopian Migrants Capsizes

Another boat carrying Ethiopian Migrants sank off the coast of Djibouti. Ethiopian embassy in Djibouti has confirmed the incident through a statement.

16 dead bodies have been found so far. 77 illegal migrants were onboard. The boat sank near Godoria Djibouti. 28 people are still missing. Among the killed, 5 were children.

This is the second such incident this month involving deaths of illegal Ethiopian migrants. Around 2 weeks ago, 38 Ethiopian migrants died when a boat capsized off Djibouti’s coast.

Thousands of Ethiopians every year try to cross into the Middle Eastern countries from Ethiopia illegally. These migrants enter Djibouti from Ethiopia and from Djibouti they take sea routes to reach Yemen. Yemen-Saudi Arabia border is heavily guarded. Saudi border guards open fire at those who try to enter Saudi Arabia illegally. Despite all these risks, Ethiopian migrants risk their lives to reach Saudi Arabia and other middle eastern countries. Several human trafficking gangs are operating in Ethiopia, Djibouti and Yemen.

Thousands of Ethiopian illegal immigrants are being repatriated by the Ethiopian government from Saudi Arabia. This month, a senior Ethiopian delegation visited Saudi Arabia, finalizing preparations for the return of these migrants. Hundreds have returned home in recent days through special flights launched by Ethiopian and Saudi authorities.
