Hundreds of Sudanese refugees fled after their camp came under attack this week by Amhara militia members.
Since last year, Sudanese refugees have been entering Ethiopia after war broke out between Sudanese Military and Rapid Support Forces. Ethiopia is hosting more than 30,000 Sudanese refugees who are mainly being kept at refugee camps in the Amhara region.
Interestingly more than 60,000 Ethiopian refugees, mainly from Tigray, entered Sudan during Ethiopian civil war (Nov 2020 to November 2022).
The Sudanese refugees have been complaining of attacks on their camps by Amhara militias. Since last year, Amhara militia members have been fighting the Ethiopian security forces. Clashes between Fano militias and security forces have been happening across the Amhara region.
Amhara region shares a long border with Sudan and Sudanese refugees who enter Ethiopia mostly enter through the Amhara region. This week, Sudanese Refugee camp Kumar in Amhara region was attacked by Amhara militia members. The camp is located in the Amhara region around 70 km from Sudan Ethiopia border. The camp had around 8,000 refugees. Hundreds of refugees starting fleeing the camp, who were detained by security forces and brought back to the camp.
United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) confirmed this incident in a statement. This is not the first time that refugees came under attack in Ethiopia. Eritrean refugees have also been complaining of similar attacks in the Amhara region.
Sudanese refugees accuse Amhara militia members of kidnapping for ransom, abductions, looting and theft at the camps.
