5 million Ethiopian students are not enrolled in Amhara region. The Amhara regional education bureau has announced that the number of registered students is not more than 2 million. The regional government had set a target of the enrollment of 7 million students.
The bureau has stated that the security problem in the region and other reasons for registering less students than expected. Most of the 6th, 8th and 12th grade students in Gojam zone could not take the exam.
Parents in the region are concerned about children not going to school and that the issue was serious.
Since last year, fighting has been ongoing in the Amhara region between Fano militias and the Ethiopian military. Thousands have been killed and injured in this conflict so far. The conflict has serious affected the educational and business activities in the region.
