Reportedly, Addis Ababa city will soon launch a plan to ban older vehicles from the city. This initiative targets vehicles that are 20 years old or older. Reports show that many older vehicles, such as Ladas, minibuses, and taxis, currently operate in public transport.
The plan to ban older vehicles from Addis Ababa city encourages owners to switch to electric vehicles individually and as a group. Additionally, the Federal Road Transport Authority has banned heavy vehicles over 30 years old from entering Djibouti, which may impact this initiative.
At the start of this month, Addis Ababa planned to purchase 100 electric buses to enhance and modernize its public transportation system. The transport office announced that it will implement various initiatives to improve the sector in the upcoming year, 2025.
Mr. Worku Desta, the deputy head of the Addis Ababa Transport Bureau, shared that the city administration typically acquires 200 to 300 buses each year to strengthen the transport network.
