National Bank of Ethiopia Makes the Use of National ID Mandatory

The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has made the use of the National ID, known as Fayda, mandatory for all banking operations in the country. Starting from January 2026, opening and maintaining a bank account won’t be possible without a national ID. This decision was announced this week.

The NBE will implement this decision in following phases:

  • January 1, 2025: All bank branches in  Addis Ababa will require customers to present their Fayda ID.
  • July 1, 2025: The requirement will extend to major cities nationwide.
  • January 1, 2026: It will be implemented across the country at all bank branches.
  • By December 31, 2026: Existing account holders must link their accounts to their National ID.
