Dozens of students were injured in a grenade attack on a school in the Gojjam zone of Ethiopia’s troubled Amhara region on Thursday.
The incident happened at Damot Primary School situated in Finote Selam town. Finote Selam town is situated in west Gojjam zone. According to Amhara Police, a student named Yohannes Tesfaye threw the hand grenade in a classroom where students were taking the exam. The attacker, who injured himself during the attack, was arrested by security forces.
The regional police accused Fano militia of hiring Yohannes Tesfaye to carry out the attack. Fano groups denied any hand in the incident, accusing the military of having perpetrated the attack. Around 25 students were injured in Thursday’s attack. Four were seriously injured. Two were referred to a hospital in Bahir Dar, the regional capital.
Since last year, Fano militias have been fighting the Ethiopian security forces across the Amhara region. While the regional government and security forces claim that things are returning to normalcy, the regional, zonal and district administrations seem partially paralyzed.
