The Ethiopian parliament has approved new Law about Rural Land Use and Management. The official Rural Land Use and Management Decree No. 1324/2016. (E.C) was unanimously passed by the Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives. This new law amends a past law that was made 18 years ago about how land in rural areas is used and managed. The new Rural Land Use and Management Law gives more rights to farmers, people who take care of animals, and people who move around with their animals to different places to find food. It aims to ensure that women get their due share in land.

Those found involved in Illegal buying or selling land in rural areas can face prison term for up to 5 years. Anyone illegally entering the land that belongs to someone else (private property), the government, or the public without permission, can face a prison term for up to 5 years.

The new Law approved by the Ethiopian parliament will affect the farmers who own land and have remarried after their previous marriage ended. As per this law, if a farmer married again, all of the farmer’s spouses will have rights to the land the farmer owns. Moreover, If a farmer has more than one wives because of culture or religion, the law will make sure the rights of all the wives are protected.

Additionally, the Rural Land Use and Management Law says that old ways of managing land and solving land problems can not be used if they go against important rights, like those in the constitution, or special rights for women.

However, enforcing the law effectively across the rural areas of Ethiopia could be a challenge. Raising awareness and ensuring fair implementation will be crucial.
