Ethiopian Ministry of Education (MoE) has imposed a ban on promotion to the rank of full professor. Higher education institutions have been told not to make promotions to the designation of full professor.
The Ministry is revising the relevant law which governs the promotion of academics. The law called “Guidelines for Promotion of Academic Staff” has been in force for over 3 years.
“we have come to understand that some higher education institutions are continuing to make promotions to the designation of professor, in violation of the ban, without following the guidelines, in a manner that is not transparent, inconsistent, and in violation of the education quality assurance reforms,” said the Minister of Education, Berhanu Nega.
The MoE has announced that promotion to the rank of full professor given by any institution of higher education will not be accepted from December 10, 2024. It asked the senior management bodies and the management board of the institutions to wait patiently until the relevant guidelines are revised.
