Ethiopian Airline and UAE based Etihad Airways have been fined for flying in the restricted airspace.

Reportedly, the U.S. Department of Transportation has fined Ethiopian Airlines $425,000 and Etihad Airways $400,000. The two airlines were fined after their planes were found to have flown in restricted airspace without authorization, the U.S. Department of Transportation said in a statement.

On December 12, 2024, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a statement in this regard. An inquiry was conducted by the DOT’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection (OACP). The inquiry revealed that from February 2020 to December 2022, Ethiopian Airline operated “a significant number of flights” between Ethiopia and Djibouti using the United Airlines (UA) code. Etihad Airway also conducted flights using the JetBlue (B6) code between the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

The US Department of Transportation said these flights required proper authorization under US regulations, and the investigation found that the airlines continued the flights despite prior notice.
