Ethiopia Drafts Policy to Use Fuel Stations for Charging EV

The Petroleum and Energy Authority of Ethiopia has drafted a policy to use existing fuel stations for dual purposes. If approved, the fuel stations will have spots for charging EV (Electric Vehicles) too. The draft policy contains details of requirements, process and pricing for establishing these charging spots on existing fuel stations.

This week, the authority discussed the draft policy with fuel distributors and briefed them in detail about it.

Last week, in a meeting, the National Fuel Reform Committee, led by Trade Minister, Gebremeskel Chala, decided to continue the ban on the construction of new petrol stations. Instead of building separate stations for electric vehicles, the government intends to use existing fuel stations for charging EV.

The Ministry of Transport and Logistics said recently that the number of imported and domestically assembled electric vehicles in Ethiopia had exceeded 100,000. Though the Ethiopian government is keen on introducing and backing the use of electric vehicles, there are not many charging stations.

The Petroleum and Energy Authority of Ethiopia wants to introduce nearly half a million electric vehicles in 10 years as part of an ongoing transition to electric mobility. Read More…
