The Oil and Energy Authority of Ethiopia has drafted a decree to punish fuel stations owners responsible for artificial fuel shortages. The new law, if approved, would authorize the authority to not only close down gas stations but also arrest and fine the people who deliberately create fuel shortages to make money.
Th decree will be submitted to the Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives for approval. The Oil and Energy Authority officials hope that once the new decree is enforced, the authorities will be able to stop illegal practices at fuel stations.
Yesterday, MPs discussed and debated new laws during their regular meeting. After the discussions, they sent these draft laws to the relevant committees for further review and refinement. One of the key decrees they talked about was a proposal to update and change an existing law called the Federal Government Employees Decree No. 1064/2010.
In the same meeting, the Ethiopian parliament approved a new Law about Rural Land Use and Management. Moreover, the official Rural Land Use and Management Decree No. 1324/2016. (E.C) was unanimously passed by the Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives. As per this new law, those found involved in the Illegal buying or selling of land in rural areas can face prison terms for up to 5 years.
