Bati Market is one of the biggest markets in Ethiopia. It is held every Monday in Bati town of Oromia Special Zone. The Oromia special zone is situated in the Amhara region. But today, the Bati market remained closed. The police members are deployed at the exit and entry of the market to prevent entry of people.

People belonging to different ethnic groups merge all together at the market to sell, buy, and exchange things. The market is huge, chaotic, and covers an entire hillside. It is one of the most interesting markets in Africa. Interestingly it has an old gallows (dating from the emperor’s day).

People from Amhara, Oromia, Afar, and Somali regions visit the Bati market to sell and buy goods. The market has several sections including livestock, grains, and general markets. It is one of the largest markets in Ethiopia.

The local or zonal governments did not issue any statements about the market closure. But reportedly Bati market is closed due to a local disease (plague) that is infecting people in nearby neighborhoods.

Last night, police removed all the people from the Bati market and the market became empty at late night. Normally, on Sunday late at night, the Bati market is always full of people. Today early morning of Monday, not only the market was empty even also the roads were also closed.
