CBE Ethiopian Bank has released another set of pictures of those customers who failed to return money withdrawn illegally. This is the 6th round of publication of pictures by the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia CBE.
Last month, the bank lost $14 million when CBE systems were hit by a technical glitch. Thousands of customers made illegal money transactions/transfers during the technical glitch. Around $10 million have been recovered by the bank so far.
The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia CBE has been issuing deadlines to the bank customers to return the money gained illegally. The bank has released six sets of pictures of its customers so far, the last one released last night. This 6th set contains pictures of those account holders who withdrew from 53,000 to 64,000 birrs illegally.
This week CBE Ethiopian bank put up big posters outside its branches showing these customers’ pictures. The release of customers’ pictures is being criticized. Questions are being if CBE has any legal authority to disclose private details of customers.
According to some legal experts, only police or judiciary can order the release of customers’ pictures, hence CBE’s move is illegal.
