Employees of the Addis Ababa city administration, who were arrested for reducing tax amounts appeared in court. Reportedly, the bribe amount was more than 10 million birr. The federal high court in Lideta held a regular appointment hearing. This hearing examined the basis for the suspicions and the defense arguments made by the suspects’ lawyer.

The court presented several individuals, including Habtamu Gidisa, the Tax Audit Team Coordinator at the Addis Ababa Revenues Bureau’s High Taxpayers Office. Other suspects included senior officers Simret Gebrezabizab, Yosef Babu, Ebenezer Tolosa, Lemmi Sile, and cashier Mekdes Aregawi.

Prosecutors allege that the suspects accepted bribes from various organizations. They reportedly neglected their official duties and exploited taxpayers. The suspects promised companies significant reductions in their tax liabilities, lowering amounts from 100 million birr to just 13 million birr.

The police investigator requested an additional 14 days to gather more evidence and documentation related to the case. The suspects’ lawyer argued and stated that my clients did not commit any crimes as alleged. Moreover, the lawyer also sought bail for them. However, the police contended that granting bail could lead to the destruction of evidence.

As the investigation remains in its early stages, discussions continue regarding the origins of suspicion and other related matters. Reportedly, police need more time to investigate.
