Ethiopian pensioners have rejected the new salary revision announcement by the government. The salary revisions will be implemented in coming weeks. Pensioners claim that they have been totally neglected in the new salary enhancement scheme.
“The pensioners served the country and paid the price now they are forgotten,” they complain.
When Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed gave an explanation about the macroeconomic reform months ago, he said that there will be a salary increase of up to 300 times for the workers who are paid a low monthly salary.
Repeated attempts by pensioners to get clarification from the government about how they will will be treated according to the new salary scales have been unsuccessful.
Government employees are also complaining about salary revisions. They say that new salary increase is not what they expected. The Ethiopian government last week announced a significant increase in salaries for public sector employees, totaling 91.4 billion birr. The minimum salary for government employees has been increased to 4,760 birr, a staggering 332.7% increase from the previous minimum of 1,100 birr. The maximum salary will increase from 20,468 birr to 21,491 birr, reflecting a 5% rise.
