Universities in the Amhara region have suspended student admissions due to worsening security situation in the region.
Universities had called to admit students, but following the ongoing fighting in the region, including drone and airstrikes, they extended the call indefinitely. Debre Markos University, Enjbara University, Debre Berhan University, Wolo University, Debre Tabor University have extended their calls, and Bahirdar University has removed the call from its social media page.
Amhara Fano militias are blocking all main roads in the region. On Thursday, the road blocks began for an indefinite period of time. Since Thursday, vehicle movement has been largely suspended across the Amhara region. Since last year, the Fano militias have been fighting the Ethiopian security forces. This week, the Ethiopian military and Amhara regional government announced the launch of a major military operation against the Fano militias.
Out of the 9 campuses of Bahir Dar University, Zenzelmana and Sebatamit Tbebe Gion campuses have been closed due to the security situation. Security forces have launched an operation to identify and arrest the people who are actively supporting Fano. Dozens of government officials, security officials, academics, scholars etc have been arrested in the last one week.
