Professor Beyene Petros, a notable Ethiopian politician and educator, passed away today at the age of 74. He was born on March 11, 1950, in Hadiya, Ethiopia. Beyene served as a professor of biology at Addis Ababa University and represented Badawacho in the Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives.
Professor Beyene Petros entered politics in 1991, when the EPRDF came to power. Beyene held the position of Deputy Minister of Education. He became a key opposition figure in 1995 and was first elected to parliament in May 2000. Throughout his career, he advocated for democratic reforms and helped form various opposition coalitions, including the United Ethiopian Democratic Forces (UEDF) and the Ethiopian Federal Democratic Forum (Medrek).
Academically, Professor Beyene Petros earned his BSc from Addis Ababa University. He obtained an MSc from the University of Wisconsin and a PhD from Tulane University. His research focused on malaria and other tropical diseases, resulting in nearly 120 peer-reviewed publications. He also led several academic and health organizations.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed deep sorrow over Beyene’s passing. He praised Beyene’s commitment to peaceful political struggle and constructive dialogue. Many will remember his legacy as an advocate for democracy and education.
