Long queues are being seen outside CBE Ethiopia Bank while stringent security measures have been adopted by the bank authorities.
Commercial Bank of Ethiopia Headquarter is situated in Ambassador Beherawi area of Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital. Since Monday, long queues have been observed outside the headquarters. The queues are mostly seen in the morning when CBE Ethiopian Bank employees arrive to check in. On Monday and Tuesday, the queues seen were several hundreds meters long.
Reportedly, strict search and identity checking measures adopted at the entrance of the bank are causing such long queues. Bank employees have to wait in queues for a long time before clearance for entry into the bank building.
The security measures were introduced this Monday after Amhara Fano militia members clashed with Ethiopian police in Bole sub city of Addis Ababa. On Friday, two Amhara Fano fighters were killed and 1 was captured by the police after a shootout erupted between Fano and Addis Ababa police. Amhara Fano militia members, fighting in Amhara region against security forces since last year, have been threatening to reach Addis Ababa to dismantle the Ethiopian federal government.
Interestingly, CBE Ethiopia bank was hit by an unprecedented technical glitch last month. CBE lost around $14 million during the glitch. The bank has recovered more than $10 million so far.
While beefed up security measures introduced by the bank seem linked to the overall security situation in the capital city, bank employees complain that a speedy search & identity checking system should be introduced at the entrance.
