Fighting between Fano & Military in Welkait Tegede Humera

Fighting erupted between Fano militia fighters and Ethiopian military in Welkait Tegede Humera, the disputed territory between the Tigray and Amhara regions of Ethiopia. Southern zone ( Raya Alamata, Korem, Ofla, Zata etc ) Western Zone (Humera, Welkait Tsegede) and Tselemti are disputed between the Tigray and Amhara regions.

According to locals of the area, on Friday May 2, 2024, Fano fighters entered Maksegno Gebeya, a small town in the Tegede zone. They stayed there for several hours. After they withdrew from the town, fighting erupted between the Fano and military in the outskirts of Maksegno Gebeya town.

Reportedly Ethiopian national defense force (ENDF) was not deployed to the town before the entry of Fano. But now the town is under full ENDF control. While the extent of the damage in the clash remains unknown, it seems that Fano fighters from Gondar entered Tegede.

Fano groups have been complaining that Ethiopian government of the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had decided to hand over western and southern zones to the Tigray fighters. They have been vowing to stop that.

Last month, Amhara provisional government in Southern zone was dismantled and Tigray fighters took control of large parts of the southern zone. Amhara regional government and Fano groups issued statements terming it a violation of Pretoria deal demanding the withdrawal of Tigray fighters from newly captured territories.

Last week, Tigray military commander Tadesse Werede made an announcement about the the implementation of Pretoria deal in southern and western zones. He said, by the end of first week of June 2024, Pretoria deal will be implemented in Southern zone and Tselemeti. And by the end of first week of 2024, Pretoria deal will be implemented in western zone (Humera Welkait Tsegede) too.

It seems that Fano groups from the Amhara region of Ethiopia are pushing towards Welkait Tegede Humera to stop likely dismantlement of Amhara provisional government and expulsion of Amhara militias from there.
