Ethiopian Government Considers Laying Off Thousands of Employees

The Ethiopian government is considering laying off tens of thousands of government employees.

Though the recently approved public servants’ decree “enables institutions to carry out their missions efficiently”, many government workers may be laid off in connection with the decree, say government officials on condition of anonymity.

The Chairman of the Standing Committee on Human Resource Development, Employment and Technology Affairs of the House of Representatives, Dr. Negari Lencho, recently gave a detailed explanation about the purpose and importance of the decree.

He said that misinformation is being spread by some media outlets due to misunderstanding of the contents of the draft decree. The decree aims to create ethnic diversity in institutions such as courts, prosecutors, police, defense, and security but it could lead to new recruitments and laying off of existing employees.

Interesting it was recently said by the Ethiopian State Owned News Agency that ” the volume of civil service is more than what the country can handle and what the service needs.”

As Dr. Negri mentioned in his speech said, “The number of workers in each government office is very large. From the point of view of organization, the structure in one office carries a lot of manpower.” .
