In different parts of Ethiopia, many people are dying in what appears to be an epidemic of malaria. Medical experts say that 40-50 people are dying every day in Wolaita alone.

They say that this number may not accurately describe the number of deaths per day, because the disease is getting out of control, especially in the rural areas. The death toll has increased due to shortage of medical supplies and medicines.

In addition to Wolaita, the epidemic has worsened in Silte, Kembata, Gurage zones as well. Cases are being reported in western Oromia including East Welega and the surrounding areas.

The Public Health Institute of the Amhara Region has announced that more than 51,650 malaria patients have been registered in the Amhara region in just one week. Damte Lanker, coordinator of the malaria program of the institute, said that 40 districts of the region account for 72 percent of the spread of malaria.

The coordinator stated that the spread of malaria in the region has been increasing significantly for the last 5 years. He pointed out that the 2024-2025 fiscal year has shown an increase of 65.8 percent compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.
