The Ethiopian government has rejected independent international investigations into human rights abuses committed in Ethiopia. Yesterday UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution to make an independent international mechanism for inquiry into human rights violations committed in the Tigray, Amhara, and Afar regions of Ethiopia since the start of the Tigray conflict in November 2020.
The Ethiopian government, which was against yesterday’s special session on Ethiopia, issued a statement afterward rejecting the resolution adopted by the UN body. In a statement Ethiopian government categorically rejected the resolution refusing to co-operate with international investigators.
Since the start of the Tigray conflict in November 2020, human rights abuses possibly amounting to war crimes have been reported in the Tigray, Amhara, and Afar regions of Ethiopia. Investigations done so far by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, UN Human Rights Commission, etc have been rejected by one party or the other.
