Ethiopian Electric Utility and Huawei agreed to work together and signed a MoU to bring electricity to areas in Ethiopia where there is no electricity. They will work only in those areas which are not connected to the main electricity network. This meeting was held at Ethiopia Green Energy Summit 2024 in Addis Ababa.

The goal of this MoU is to provide electricity to everyone by the year 2030. Shiferaw Telila, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Utility, explained that they will use solar power to light up these off-grid areas.

Ethiopian Electric Utility and Huawei will work on producing the electricity in a more modern way. Additionally, EEU and Huawei have plans to build places to charge electric vehicles.

Liu Jifan, who is in charge of Huawei in Ethiopia, said they want to help Ethiopia with clean energy and technology. Moreover, they aim to provide solutions that don’t rely on the main electricity grid.

Ethiopia mainly generates its electricity from hydropower, which comes from water. But they also have a lot of potential to produce electricity from other renewable sources like wind, sunlight, and geothermal energy.

This agreement between the EEU and Huawei is a significant step towards improving access to electricity in Ethiopia, particularly in remote and off-grid areas. Additionally, the focus on clean energy technologies signifies Ethiopia’s commitment to reducing reliance on traditional energy sources and transitioning towards a more environmentally friendly energy sector.
