A new study shows that Ethiopia has effectively decreased tobacco use by resisting pressure from tobacco companies and smokers. An international organization focused on keeping children away from tobacco this week praised Ethiopia for its success in reducing the number of cigarette smokers.

Ethiopian government has imposed high taxes on tobacco products and banned their advertisement on mass media. These actions have helped Ethiopia in its efforts to combat smoking rather than just reducing the number of tobacco users.

The study looked at how well Ethiopia is following tobacco control laws. Only 5% population of Ethiopia are smokers, the study concludes. Buyers must be over 21 years of age to buy cigarettes in Ethiopia. Smoking is prohibited in entertainment and service establishments, as well as in places where people gather.

While Ethiopian has been able to reduce tobacco use, the use of Khat by Ethiopian youths is still widespread. Ethiopia is world’s largest grower of Khat and it is one of the fastest-growing Ethiopian exports. Khat is a flowering evergreen shrub that is abused for its stimulant-like effect. Khat has two active ingredients, cathine and cathinone.

According to a study conducted last year, 22% of Ethiopians were found consuming Khat. This study included 12,688 participants, of which (80.29%) were from rural areas. The mean age of participants was 30.92 years old. 9% were involved in dual use of alcohol and Khat. The prevalence of dual alcohol and khat use is of concern. Dual use is much lower than either Alcohol or Khat use. Alcohol is by far the most common substance used among male adults.
